September 18th-22nd-2012-Wildlife

 Northern Flicker
Mama deer and the three fawns.
The daddy fox waiting for some nuts one morning.
Yep! The rat is still here. But the lady who lives next door spotted it and told everyone in the building and the office. Of course the story has been blown out of proportion and now there are three rats and they are the size of cats!!! Ha! I expect to get a letter soon. Meanwhile the maintenance man has put a live trap down inside the grate where it was coming from. But the smart rat has not gone near there since.

The back yard on a beautiful sunny morning. This is the view from my window. Can you see the squirrel sitting on the rock wall in the foreground?

First time I've seen a cat around here in ages. But of course it will never catch that rat!..Ha!
One of the pretty red squirrels who are still hanging around.
I love these beautiful birds. I very seldom get the opportunity to get pictures. So was happy that this one sat still long enough for me.
Mama deer was out by herself.

Don't handle these things. They leave an awful rash.
I had never seen one of these before so watched them for quite a while. They aren't poisonous but can have a bad allergic reaction to some who handle them. I wouldn't let any kids play with them.

September 12th-17th-2012

This is the other Doe. The one fawn is hers but it always hung with the other doe and fawns. This is the first I'd seen her all summer.

The other doe with her fawn.

This is the other doe's fawn. It's coming out by itself a lot now. I'm wondering if it's a male.

And a sad story. This mourning dove got attacked by a hawk but the hawk got spooked and left it with lots of it's tail feathers missing and an injured leg and bald spot on it's head. I got it inside and gave it a warm, comfortable spot for the night but it died by morning. It was bleeding more than I thought. From the neck area. It was bright eyed at 8 pm. I gave it some water and then put it in a dark, warm spot for the night. This happened just before dark. It's good in a way that it died. It would have taken months to get back in shape and then it might never have flown again. I did my best.

I have no idea what kind of spider this is but it was trying to rebuild it's web after a rain storm. It's about an inch around when it's legs are out. I have been killing simular ones that are inside. Yikes! Some kind of Weaver or Tunnel Spider maybe?

September 1st-6th Photos-2012-Foxes-Hawk-Birds

This is a male yearling that I don't see very often. He's very timid. He used to have a mate but I haven't seen her in a very long time.
A young male Cardinal looks pretty ratty right now till all it's feathers are in.
 I like this squirrel's ears..ha!
The daddy gray fox and his son. They sure look and act alike...  so cute!

I spotted this Cooper's Hawk lying down on the other side of that bush. I have never seen a hawk do that before. He stayed that way for a long time, which made me think he might have hurt himself. Later he got up into that bush  and I watched but when i turned away he was gone. Not sure if he flew or was on the ground out of my sight. The squirrels were still acting like he was on the ground. I just hope he was okay and flew away.
He was acting like he was sunning himself. I've seen other birds do that but never a hawk. Maybe cooling off? Has anyone seen a hawk do this before? I even opened the window to try and scare him off but he didn't move.

He seemed to walk okay and he did spread his wings a couple of times. Missed those shots though. Got some video of him also.

A Few Leftover Critter Pics From August-2012

 A couple of young skunks
I feel bad for this little guy. He has at least three bot fly larvae in him.

Has anyone ever seen squirrels carrying off rocks? The ones around here do it all the time. In fact all the landscaping rocks have disappeared over the past 16 years.. I thought they were using them in their dreys but I'm not sure.

Goodbye August!
